What Sleeps Within

Written by Joseph Hobbs

Aside from what we might say, underneath the more private layer of what we think and feel, there is still an incredible amount further beneath the surface within us all. Just like our dreams, whether it is all a jumble or something with meaning, there is something there, aside from the part of you reading this. Your mind is the most intricate and complex device ever discovered, boiling with all kinds of concepts, calculations, and feelings in ways both visible and impossible to see.

And inside you, there are things that can gnaw at you, trouble you. Things that you can take out or keep locked away. In this sea of your mind, I want to draw attention to the fact that there Is an untold treasure horde that you can put to use. As many great inventions, libraries and wonders as a person could wish. The only thing keeping them ethereal is that you have not made them a tangible reality, yet. This week I just want to prod the idea of that slumbering genius within you, that creator that may have something just beneath the water that would be wonderful to bring out.

Try to make something or draw something creative from the ideas and instinct that come to mind. it can be a funny thought, an idea. A little practice maybe. This week, I wanted to look at a way to lose a little weight. That led me a couple of days later to make my own lentil soup. I’ve never tried anything like that, and there was no obvious connection between that thought and the result that I saw, or any of my friends and family. But what matters is that little piece of creativity as an example. What’s important is that if I can think up something, I know for an absolute certainty that you can too.

Whether it is something angry, melancholy, however you choose to make it; it will make a difference. It is a medicine for the mind. By letting something out you face your difficulties. A struggle and the efforts you make are both brought into the physical, into things that will be seen and appreciated.

What can you do? It’s a small question to ask, but not something you or I could begin to answer. You have the senses and capabilities to program, type, paint, perform great physical feats and arts of eloquence and skill. There are artistic pieces, even artistic mediums waiting to be discovered. And there is nothing, nothing in this world that categorically says you cannot be a part of that. Is that tune you hum to yourself every now and then a song you can put to music? Did you have an idea at a meeting that could be a little side hustle? Have you always been gifted with baking, but never stopped to think that people would love to enjoy that recipe that only you know, just waiting to be written down?

It is sleeping. It was sleeping in Tyson Fury. It was sleeping in Ada Lovelace. It is sleeping within you.

And you can wake it up.
